It would make a great option since Gmax is free and it's a great modeler; Being a cut-down version of 3dsmax makes it very attractive to those already familiar with the tool.
About having to open the listener; you can use the GmaxSLGRAB utility used by the yafray community. It grabs the info in the listener and pastes it into the xml file for you. Find more about it here:
