From SILO post

On the SILO 3d forum Chronos made some comments on limited or not well implemented features on KT. Please share your point of view as well about this features so we can better serve the KT usability.

http://www.silo3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11791

PROS:

- Freeware.

- Decent ability to handle several million polygons.

- Good rendering speed for being freeware.

CONS:

- Silo isn't fully supported yet and it's .Obj format (from Silo) isn't read very well.

- Many simple features are buried in menus and other features require a large amount of digging.

- Menu navigation is made difficult.

- Scene navigation is a complete PITA on some scenes objects because of the OGL and it's plane clipping.

- The Materials are abit haphazard and without alot of settings.

- Overall it has an interface bent more for technical users than casual users.

IMO, the current version of Kerky(1.4.1) is good for clay renders only because of it's hostile interface and buried features/options.

------------

- Silo isn't fully supported yet and it's .Obj format (from Silo) isn't read very well.

Regarding the OBJ import it works well with version 2.0 as far as I can tell.[/quote]

I don't bother importing SIA files into Kerky because they are not completely supported, so why bother, and why jump through the hoops of triangulation when the .Obj import does it for you. .Obj files of 5+ megabytes with multiple objects either touching or not, roughly 20% of the time merge together. And I don't know which program is causing the problem, but materials get lost in the move.

- Menu navigation is made difficult.

Menu mavigation is similar to SILO. Altough in SILO is better implemented since you just need to use the ALT + mouse and wheel In KT you need to press Q,R,ESC keys to switch modes.

I mis-wrote this. The menu doesn't have the 33 or 45 degree mouse freedom that other programs have and it causes it to be a pain.

- Scene navigation is a complete PITA on some scenes objects because of the OGL and it's plane clipping.

Right now the clipping planes has been extended much further, so unless you use out of scale models you should not have any problems with clipping

Well that's a start! But in no way should anyone have to rescale anything to just navigate a scene.

- The Materials are abit haphazard and without alot of settings.

There are plenty of settings for the materials, is matter of adding the proper procedurals for aditional settings to expose them. Again, we are opened to suggestion of "relevant or needed"
new material features.

Having to add ANYTHING to get a program to expose ANY settings is a MASSIVE failure. Change the materials system into a node system and it might be worth using, but running with compressed menus or menus at all simply is combersome.

- Overall it has an interface bent more for technical users than casual users.

It is true that the GUI is not the most elegant, and modern. No skins, no customization, etc. The main reason for this is related to the cross-platform tool used to built KT GUI. Fox Tool kit let us built from a single source code versions for Windows, linux, Mac mantaining a very small executable which does not need platform specific API. Future release of KT will be able to implement Skins and further customization, but that
again depend on Fox development itself.

Since it's designed for cross platform use than the UI should be far simpler in design and far more easy to use. Digging into a 3rd level semi-code menu just to change the settings on a light is not an "ease-of-use" design.

John Keates,

For the love of GOD tell me how your getting Quads into Kerky!!

*begs shamelessly*

I can only say that chrono obviously don't understand KT material system and i belief he even did not try to read any documentation about it .... so it is just a superficial comment i guess
it is often difficult to know if the person that make such comments really have taken the time to get used to the program or try to understand it at all ........ it is very easy to open a new program and try to do the same things your used to do with your 3D modeler and if it don't work the same way you expect it , then you just make this kind of comments ....

What kind of material setting are you missing chrono ?
what make you think that it is limited ?

if it is because it is not node based .... than it is again more a "visual" interface thing but it say nothing about the capability of KT Material Editor ( do you also think that Maxwells Material system is limited and don't have enough settings or options because it is not node based ? )

Probably what Jhon does not like about the material editor is that instead of exposing into a single windows all the options as with 3d max or Vray,
one need to "dig" into secondary windows. I hope he could undertand the
logic behind that once he get to pass the initial learning curve.

Another issue that he need to undertand is that KT is a physically based render so "objects" as to be scaled proportionaly. So that is not the same to illuminate a 1 m long object as a 100 m long one. So object scale is important not only in KT but any physicaly based renderer.

exactly clicpi ..... but allot of people just don't like to learn new things .... this is the problem .... judging a new program based on laking knowledge ..... is another problem that happens quit often , specially if the program is Free ware ( its like free ware gives you the right to say anything even you don't know what you are talking about )

But this kind of behavior makes this people have it very difficult to learn any program because they want other programs to work the way they have learned it once ...... so it is difficult for them to learn new techniques and innovating ways of doing things ......
i really think you need to be a bit curios by nature to be able to learn new things and new programs and specially when it comes to 3D and rendering because every day there are new thing to learn if you really want to master it
