Rendering an Arroway texture correctly

I'm learning to make materials from Arroway textures. Could anyone please confirm that I'm making this material in the correct manner?

Image

I have used one of Patrick's materials , the wood one and replaced the diffuse, specular and bump maps. I also altered the shininess in the specular layer to reduce the reflection a bit.

I'm putting the diffuse map in here

and here

The bump map goes in here

The specular map goes in here

With this particular material I forgot to tick invert Weight #1, where the specular map is applied. What effect would this have on the material and why do we need to do this?

What is the best preset to render the K-ball on? I tried MLT but this takes too long for; 50 mins for 30 passes. I want something that looks good, but is also more efficient.

Invert weight is crucial part in this material, if you don't use it then #0 and #1 layers are blend together. If inverted weight is used then 0# and #1 will be separated. naturally you could have two different weight maps, but with invert option there is only need for one.

I ticked 'invert' this time for weight #1 and this time did 100 passes MLT BiPT.

I think it looks much better, but can anyone give me tips to make it look better or is this as good as it gets?

EDIT: Although the texture seems better, there seems to be a rather odd white cast on the material. Any ideas what might be causing it?

Try this http://www.kerkythea.net/users/Patrick/ ... w_AA01.zip
Zip includes tutorial and sample material. Not sure if it got lost in some point, but anyway I republished it here http://www.kerkythea.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9768

Newer method includes XOR layer, diffuse layer and specular layer.

Ok, this is the material I produced using Lis-Wood.

I wasn't sure where to put the specular map, but I attached a screenshot.

They all look fine to me,
but then I really don't recall, in my lifetime, ever seeing a ball in a lighting studio made of wood flooring, so I have no idea what it should look like.

why don't you try making , and then see if your wood floor is looking good or not?

A good test room is very important for making wood flooring mats, IMHO.

Perhaps use half bump-map strength.
