A Connector Component - Combined SU / Kerkythea wish

I was pondeing about this a bit, and am uncertain if this has been asked alread (couldn't find it anyway), but here's the lowdown...

Basically, SketchUp can't handle too big a model. Kerky, on the other hand, can. So... I was thinking about *drum roll* The Connector Component! It would be a component that you add to a certain point in a model (say, the neck of Star Trek's Galaxy class) and a component which would be added to another model; that would be the saucer section, in this case. You'd make a model, make two components of the model, and add a Connector Component to a certain point. You would then be able to continue working on two models seperately, going all out on detailing, without SketchUp doing Epic Fail because the model in it's totallity is getting too big. Once you're done, you'd export the two models to Kerky, open one and import the other. If you'd context click in the window and select "Combine Connector Components", the two models would be treated from that point on as a single model; because of the connector component, the two models would be connected at a point of your desire, thus making sure that in the end the model looks correct.

So... Is my explenation clear, or do people need an example? If this could be implemented it would be very cool, enabling SketchUp users to make epic scale models :)

*pondering* Hey, let's make it even more easier for you guys ;) When workignint a model, one can add several connector components. Sticking to the StarTrek reference, let's disect it: there's the saucer, secondary hull, and nacelles. When creating the component, one would be able to give it a name, not just a number, so that multiple connections can be made. This would mean that a connector would be present at the nacelle pylons and the nacelles themselves (with a unique identifier, so that you're able to seperate left and right nacelle) and at the neck andsaucer :)

Or... we could make Connectables™ in SketchUp ;)

Hi BorgMan,
this is clear, but seems unnecessary for the example you give.

I mean, why not model parts A, B, and C, ...X... in the correct 'spot' in 3D space, so when you export from SU and import into KT it will piece itself together?

You can put your 'connector component' into scene A, CTRL>C copy, and open scene B Past-in-place it to know where to build the next piece.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of that! In that case, it would indeed be unnecessary to have such a component :)

Gonna try it out soon ^_^
