Re: Bug Reports for v1.5.1 RC3

Bug name:
Bump maps based on a synthesis layer mapping a procedural with a color ramp only effect part of the model.

free-text explanation on the error:
if you create a synthesis layer under bump map, add a procedural as a child then a color map, only the "positive" X areas have the texturing. This is seen in checkers, voronoi, perlin, and probably all of them.

Note, just using the procedural straight without the synthesis layer works just fine. But using it in the synthesis layer allows you to control the procedural gradient, like if you want to invert the bumping (white to black vs black to white).

operating system used
Win XP Pro
version tested on
V1.5.1 RC3
reproducible:
every time
bug category:
Materials
step-by-step procedure to reproduce
create a sphere.
Give it some diffuse color so you can see it
under Bump Mapping -> Texture:
Create a synthesis layer
under the synth, create a procedural. Perlin is fairly visible
under the synth, create a ramp texture
for the ramp texture, add two colors. set one to white, pos 0. Set the other to black, pos 1.

If using Basic Studio, the results will be obvious. If using standard studio, may need to rotate.

isn't that working just correctly now ?

the gradient part saturates the bumpmap to the max level on the left and on the right the perin noise starts to show through since the gradient is fading to 0 ?

I get what you mean, but that's not actually how the synthesis layers work. The color ramp is not a mask. It's more of a "map". The procedural generates a pattern whose value's range from 0 to 1 (and maybe more or less) all over the object, then the color ramp is used to translate those values of 0 to 1 into colors. If it were the diffuse channel you could use this to map green fading to blue, or red to yellow. But in bump mapping it uses the intensity of the color (I assume) to create the bump height. And that is what you see, at least in the portion that gets covered. If you reverse the colors, you get bumps instead of divots.

What you say makes sense, lekonna. But try reversing the colors. If it worked as a mask like you suggest, the side that gets the bumping should reverse and be on the left. But it doesn't. The bump pattern inverts, but it's applied to the same part of the model. I think it's a bug.
