Kerkythea will fully use the CPU and that can produce a lot of heat (up to CPU type). If cooling fails or is inadequate it can lead to system failure... but modern CPU's should throttle and automatic shutdown in case of overheating to prevent damage. It almost sounds that for some reason the automatic shutdown has failed or was started too late...
, if hardware is cousing these kind of problems - personally I have used , when I had a overclocked system that had a risk to fail.

I'm running that same computer but with the lesser, Nvidia 8700MGT's in SLi and have yet to have a problem. I've rendered models in excess of 50 million polys and the computer was unphased. My guess is the above posts are right, something failed and your computer over heated.
i make it a point to elevate my laptops any time they're doing something serious to allow for as much air flow as possible. You may want to look into a cooling pad for it as well.
