Adjusting Final Gather settings for PMFG

not really a great tut... but if you are experimenting with render settings...
and want to get rid of the light splotches or flares you see in a rendering.

be sure of course you have no perfectly saturated material and all of them obey the laws of physics (that is that they are not reflecting more light than they are receiving... see the material manual (link in my signature)

then, to avoid light splotches / flares:

apply your render setting to your scene,
you will base your custom render setting upon the preset you choose.
now increase final gather depth by 1 digit, and accuracy,
so if they are at 1 in the setting you are using, try 2, then 3 until they go away. maybe increase tracing depth for FG to 6.
FG rays to 500 is a good start as well... 2000 may even be overkill if you decrease it to 500 but increase your depth of bounces, and increase the accuracy, you can get good balance between speed and value.

A "low" quality Final Gather setting. (not bad, really! could maybe be good for animations) THIS SEEMS TO BE THE "SWEET SPOT" for speed/quality.

other experiments for the curious - these were the "fails" either because one of the settings shown above is faster or of equal or better quality when compared with render times.

Re: Adjusting Final Gather settings for PMFG

When you "apply" an existing render preset, all that does is pre-load them into the render settings panel for you. Then you open up the render settings panel and do your further tweaking there.
for ever after that, if you are tweaking render settings in the render settings dialog panel, then when you do your test renders you must always choose Render>Start>Settings> "##custom settings##"
If you change that to say something different then, you will basically undo any tweaks you made to the settings.

If the settings you "apply" are the exact same settings as are in the Render Settings Dialog Panel, then the render time will be exact same. It can not possibly be different.

Yes, if you are trying to get render times down, you will sacrifice quality. If this were not so, then we would have photoreal quality in zero time... and I have not yet seen that in any product.

regarding locking the light cache - it will be only the moment before you render the animation... see this:

did you yet successfully even lock the light cache?
