Hi everybody

i thought it would be good to make this small explanation Wink
I know that everybody want to be creative and this is good and necessary but when we creat materials our creativity should be restricted to the physical Laws .
i often read ...." i wanted to creat my own plastic material " or similar things . This is OK but you have to have in mind that KT is a physical accurate render and not just a scan line render where you have to fake everything .
Lets consider the following situation ..... if you where a chemist and wanted to creat plastic , you would need to follow physical rules to be able to get your plastic material , meaning that your creativity is limited to the physical laws . There are things you can not do if you realy want to have a plastic material and not end up with somthing totally different .
The same thing happens with KT .... to get a accurate plastic material , you need to use Layered Materials and use a appropriate IOR value .... if you dont do it like this , then there is no way to get a accurate plastic material ( or any material you attempt ) , it dos not matter how creative you are , you will not get the correct material . This is very different to a scan line render where you could fake things without having to care about accurate material properties ( anyway the result would not be accurate and therefor photorealism is very difficult with a scanline render ) .

i think it was Niche who defined an artist like this ...." sombody who is able to dance in chains "

There is plenty of room for creativity ( bitmap/bump map creation , finding good IOR values , good color settings, using mask , mixing materials ...etc. )

i hope this can help a bit Wink

Greetings Patrick

Hooray for being shackled down Very Happy

Your very right as already noted, and I will add also that when working with materials you do not have to re-invent the wheel. Use the great elements you find in other materials in your own, and go from there.
