Rough start of new studio

Post by giannis »

It's less than 10 days that I 've started with wxWidgets, and taking into account that I haven't worked with them before, there's a nice progress and design ideas coming out. Of course, having worked with MFC and FOX in the past, makes wxWidgets much easier since this is also a similar event-driven GUI.

To the point! Regarding new GUI, I attach here 2 screenshots only as eye candies. This is a very early work, so concentrate on the big ideas rather than small things (for example, toolbar colors).

The new GUI will have:
1. Multiple GL views connected with each other. The user may add a new GL view to watch things (like a top view or view from a still camera).
2. Multiple "material & model libraries". What was the "Insert" and "Apply Material" in KT Echo, has now become a tool panel on its own. The user may add/remove these insertion tool panels and drag and drop materials and models in a GL view.
3. The material editor is simplified and is based on a tab-fashion to change properties. Some things are also changing towards a user friendly material editor (like the material editor being modaless so that you can drag & drop materials back and forth from insertion tool panels).

Things that will be added:
1. A coordinates panel
2. An animation timer panel.

greetings

Multiple views and coordinates panel! It is what was needed to position something precisely!

The whole thing looks as far ok for me in terms of rough design.
Dragging materials brings KT to the same level of user friendly UI as Artlantis has.

Who needs KT4SU anymore ?? Errr.. hmm... I was just joking :D

Hmm .. maybe it is really a good idea to
minimize the exporters (just exporting) and
do the rest in KTStudio...

Maxwell does it like that and anyone has complained ... or ??

and i don't see the point of coding thing over and over again ...
for SU 3DStudio .. etc ... kepp it simple ... if ppl from the start have to cope with geometry ( and maybe rough materials ) and tweaking
materials in KT than its OK for them ;)

regards

I really enjoy seeing this..!! :D

One thing I would request would be a better folder system for model libraries, which I would like for you to consider, Giannis... ;)
I have some ideas, but since my technical skills are very limited, I'm not sure what will be possible and what will not... :|

The only thing I'm saying is that I would like to see a folder system, where you can have various model libraries, which you then can drag into your scene or select some proxies and replace these with models from your libraries...
(I.e. the exported scene contain 2D trees, which in KT can be used as proxies and replaced by real 3D trees...)

Hope I've made myself clear...?!? :?
If not, please let me know... :D
Cheers
Kim Frederik

Giannis mentioned that each material will be a seperate file now, Kim... so this will help... you can drop a bunch of them into a folder... and voila... a library is made - that simple! (assuming KT will make a quick icon for you automatically - which is a must for a "pro" studio IMHO)

The 'design' looks like a FANTASTIC START! perhaps it is quite mundane or 'boring'... but to me it is like a car base structure... now we need to design the car. :D

Giannis - I second Kim! PLEASE! Be sure that the models and model libraries are MUCH EASIER AND MORE INTUITIVE/automatic to create...that KT will read the folder and subfolder structure for the models, and that KT will automatically generate the previews... it's painful to create a library... and doesn't need to be! Why can't KT just recognize any .kzx file as a model it can insert?... and if it wasn't a group inside the original .kzx, it would insert it grouped into the new scene anyway.

Same with Globals too... would be good if there were some sort of 'global library' wizard... or if you could just put some pictures in a folder and when inserting them the first time into KT it would ask you if you want it to be a global, and open the wizard and ask you the info to set for the global... that would be great! If it's and hdr image you are inserting, then it would know what to set the gamma correction for automatically, etc.

Guys!!

I was sure that I was giving already the answer in my first post, but perhaps I didn't give much detail afterall...

So, let's see... do you see a small Insert tool-window with the materials, (a small up forlder button and more buttons to come)? In final version, they will be plenty of them!

In fact, the user will be able to have as many as he likes, and each of them can point to a different folder, eg. a material folder, a model folder, a globals folder. For this to work, each material/model/globals will be a binary SINGLE file that has its preview, description, data within this single file.

Additionally, these tool windows support Drag & Drop between them, between them and GL viewer and between them and mat editor (to be implemented). So, you can understand, that all you have to do is to just drag a material from the mat editor into such a tool window for the new material to be created, or drag a model from a tool window to drop at a given position in the GL viewer, etc.

Doesn't that sound really great!!!???? =tgif \:D/ \:D/

aha!
I looked at that, and read the words... but didn't click in my head that it would work for other than materials!

Just to confirm: The studio WILL be able to open FBX format files, right? (export format of Revit)
