Perspective- do not want fish eye effect up close

Logic tells me I can vary the amount of perspective distortion via the focal length of the camera, however practice show this does not happen.

Turning perspective off to parallell results in a distortion to the other end of the spectrum.

My workaround is to render at a high resolution and from a distance from the objects to minimize perspective distortion, then crop the resulting image down so the object fills the screen (see the middle picture).

There must be a way to manipulate the perspective....
